St. John’s University School of Law is pleased to announce a symposium

No Place to Live: The Housing Crisis Facing Youth Aging-Out of Foster Care

The School of Law is bringing together distinguished scholars and practitioners from diverse disciplines, including policy makers, affordable housing professionals and advocates for children and the homeless, to discuss the housing crisis that is facing adolescents as they exit foster care around the country. Young people experiencing this crisis will also play a vital role. We will engage in expert dialogue which both raises awareness and explores concrete solutions to this critical national issue.

Speakers from Chapin Hall, the Empire State Coalition, the
National Coalition to End Youth Homelessness, the New York State
Office of Children and Family Services, the Vera Institute and
Wayne State University will present data, case studies and a
discussion of the legal, regulatory and fiscal backdrop behind the
national housing crisis facing youth aging-out of foster care.

Former foster youth will speak about their struggles to find housing upon discharge from foster care.

1 – 2 p.m. Panel 3: Innovative Programs
Speakers from the The Chelsea Foyer, the Edwin Gould Academy,
First Place Fund for Youth,The Lighthouse Foundation, Stand-up for Kids, the Settlement Housing Fund and the Youth Advocacy Center will describe their approaches to providing permanent housing to aged-out youth.
This program qualifies for 1 non-transitional practice area

2 – 3 p.m. Panel 4: Where Do We Go From Here?
Speakers from The Brooklyn Young Mothers’ Collective, The Children’s Aid Society, The Door, Golden Gate University School of Law, and the Legal Aid Society will engage in dialogue about legal advocacy on individual cases, the prospects of law reform, policy changes, and impact litigation, and how to form coalitions between advocates, housing organizations, and government agencies.

Hardship Guidelines
Any participant who has an authentic financial hardship may apply for a Hardship Tuition Reduction. Attorneys earning less than $20,000 will receive a discount of 10%. Attorneys earning between $20,000 and $30,000 will receive a discount of 5%. All requests must be made in writing and be accompanied by proper documentation.
