Public Interest Center Celebrates Opening and Presents Public Interest Service Award
October 5, 2010

Public Interest Center Celebrates Opening and Presents Public Interest Service Award“Our students are being given a gift – the power of being a lawyer. And with that gift comes an obligation: the obligation to use their training, their knowledge and their skills on behalf of those less fortunate; the obligation to serve the common good.” Dean Michael A. Simons shared this resonant message with students, alumni, faculty and administrators at the official opening of the Law School’s Public Interest Center on September 21, 2010. “We are a community of learners and educators animated by the Spirit of St. Vincent,” he noted, referring to the activist St. Vincent de Paul, who devoted his life to solving the problems of the poor and voiceless. Continuing that Vincentian tradition, St. John’s is committed to searching out the causes of poverty and social injustice and to encouraging solutions that are adaptable, effective and concrete. The Law School’s new Public Interest Center is founded on, and fully embraces, this practical and sustainable approach to public service.
