Red Storm improves to a three game winning
streak; grabs 20th 3-0 win.
Queens, N.Y. - The Red Storm women's volleyball team continued
its winning streak with a 3-0 (30-27, 30-15, and 30-20) victory
over the Wildcats of Villanova Friday night at Nevin Gymnasium. St.
John's improves to 21-7 overall and 7-4 in the BIG EAST, while
Villanova falls to 19-9 overall, 6-5 in the conference.
Sophomore
LaToya Blunt (Vacaville, Calif.) led the Red Storm with a
match-high 15 kills on .435 hitting.
Shameka Mitchell (Lakeland, Fla.) recorded 12 kills and four
total blocks, while
Anicia Wood (Wotton Terrace, Barbados) put up six total blocks
as well. The Red Storm out hit the Wildcats 25 to 3 percent and
more than doubled the Wildcats total team blocks, 10 to 4.
The two teams were evenly matched early in the first game.
Villanova took a 8-5 lead after a setting miscommunication by St.
John's. But the Red Storm tied the game at nine on a touch kill by
Blunt. The Red Storm tied the game at 22-22 after a double contact
call on the Wildcats and at 27-27 after a net violation. St. John's
won the game after three straight Villanova errors.
