The Journal of Civil Rights and Economic Development is produced
by
a team of hard-working second- and third-year law students
under the guidance of our
faculty advisors. Journal membership is based on a writing
competition, which is open to students who have completed
either the first-year day program or second-year
evening program at the Law School. In order to qualify for
membership, students must have a cumulative grade point average of
3.2 or above. The Journal seeks members that have exemplary
writing, analytical, and editing skills, and strives to produce a
well-rounded and diverse team.
Twelve third-year students sit on JCRED's Executive Board
consisting of the:
- Editor-In-Chief
- Managing Editor
- Associate Managing Editor
- Executive Articles Editor
- Executive Notes and Comments Editor
- Research and Symposium Editor
- Associate Editor
- Research Editor
- Senior Articles Editor
In addition, three third-year students act as Articles Editors,
overseeing the first stage of the editing process. The Executive
Board, with assistance from the Articles Editors, controls all
aspects of the publication process, from article selection to
printing and publication by an outside vendor. Under the direction
of the Research and Symposium Editor, this group also
manages JCRED's
annual symposium, which involves researching and selecting a
topic, inviting scholars in the field to speak at the event,
selecting the best papers submitted for publication and
coordinating all other activities leading up to the day of the
symposium.
Assisting the Executive Board are 45 second-year law students that
staff the Journal’s editing team. These staff members check sources
for accuracy and ensure that the articles contain proper citations,
grammar and punctuation. In addition to preparing articles, staff
members participate in a Perspectives on Justice
course. Taught by Law School faculty members who are
experts in the field of social justice, the course offers a forum
for discussing and analyzing important issues of racial,
social and economic justice from a legal, historical and
theoretical perspective.
Based on this coursework, Journal members produce a comprehensive
research paper of publishable quality addressing a current legal
issue in racial, social or economic justice. At the end of the
spring semester, Journal staff members in good standing may
interview for the opportunity to serve on the Executive Board
or as an Articles Editor during their third year.
