Welcome to the Journal of Civil Rights and Economic
Development (JCRED).
Established in 2010 as the official journal of the Ronald
H. Brown Center for Civil Rights and Economic Development at
St. John's Law School - and building on the rich history of our
predecessor, the Journal of Legal Commentary - we are committed to
publishing
high-quality scholarship and hosting
innovative symposia on issues of social, racial and economic
justice.
The Journal publishes four issues each year, culling
submissions from scholars and students on a range of racial, social
and economic justice topics, including:
- Child advocacy
- Foster care
- Criminal justice
- National security
Each year, JCRED also presents a symposium at the Law
School featuring some of the most respected scholars and
professionals in a given field. Past symposia have
addressed legally significant social justice issues,
including:
- Environmental racism
- Domestic violence
- Race and gender issues in the 2008 presidential election
- The economic downturn's impact on New York City's economy
As a
student-run publication, we take tremendous pride in the
opportunities we offer students to engage with leading scholars,
attorneys and professionals in the field on cutting edge
topics. Through their involvement with the Journal,
students develop valuable research, writing and analytical
skills that enhance their classroom learning
and facilitate their work in the legal profession.
Journal members participate in a series of research and
writing workshops, which culminate in a comprehensive research
paper of publishable quality addressing a current legal issue in
racial, social or economic justice. Our Second-year staff members
can augment their Journal experience by participating in
Perspectives on Justice, a course on analyzing racial, social
and economic justice issues from a legal, historical and
theoretical perspective.
