Phi Delta Phi International Legal Fraternity was established in
the year 1869 to promote a higher standard of professional ethics.
It is the oldest professional fraternity in the Western Hemisphere
and holds a unique position in the history of the North American
bench, bar, and law schools. During the past two decades, Phi Delta
Phi’s reputation as an organization devoted to legal excellence has
begun to spread throughout Latin America and South America. The
fraternity is the second oldest North American legal organization
in continuous existence, established only six months after the
Columbus Ohio Bar Association and nine years before the American
Bar Association. Phi Delta Phi has chartered over one hundred and
seventy five chapters-called Inns-in the Western Hemisphere since
1869, and the number of Inns increases yearly. Phi Delta Phi has
initiated in excess of 150,000 members making it the largest legal
fraternity in existence. More judges, American presidents,
governors, senators, representatives, cabinet members, ambassadors,
American Bar Association presidents, and law school Deans have come
from the ranks of Phi Delta Phi than from any other legal
fraternity. At St. John’s University School of Law, the fraternity
is recognized as sponsoring popular social, community service
events, and speaker forums.
