The Environmental Law Society, founded in the fall of 1978,
offers interested students the opportunity to broaden their
backgrounds in this expanding and dynamic area of law. The purpose
of the Society is to promote environmental awareness at the law
school and to help develop career opportunities in environmental
law. Members of the Society write Summaries of recent case
decisions in environmental law, which are published quarterly by
the Environmental Law Section of the New York State Bar
Association. This offers students the opportunity to have their
writings published and circulated to attorneys practicing in the
field. The Society’s speaker program presents some of the most
prominent attorneys in this area of the law, addressing
controversial topics like Solid Waste Treatment, Wetlands
Preservation, the Clean Air Act and Environmental Justice. The
Society also conducts an Environmental Law Career Panel Discussion,
which features attorneys from the public and private sectors. In
addition, members participate in the University of Richmond
Environmental Law Negotiation Competition and various Environmental
Law Conferences throughout the region.
