Registration Procedures
Each fall and spring term, students register with their class. Each group will have two days to register. After all 3Ls and 4Ls register, these students will have two days to make schedule adjustments. 2Ls will then register. Afterwards, the first-come first-served waitlists will be reviewed and the general drop/add period will follow. 1Ls are automatically registered for their fall and spring courses.
First-come first-served (FCFS) and waitlists
All upper-class required, core, and advanced civil procedure courses are first-come first-served (FCFS) with a limit of 90. In addition, all courses with limited enrollment are offered on a first-come first-served basis. Since each group of students will have a prioritized opportunity to register themselves, there will be no day or evening restrictions placed on FCFS courses. If demand for a FCFS course exceeds the limit, a waitlist will be created, limited to half the number of the maximum enrollment (i.e. for courses with a limit of 90, the waitlist will hold 45 students; if the limit is 20, the waitlist will hold 10 students, etc.). All FCFS waitlists will be reviewed after 2Ls finish registering. If space permits, students who have actually registered themselves for one section of a FCFS section and then waitlisted themselves for another section of the same course will be given the section for which they are on the waitlist. They will be dropped from the other section for which they were registered. Time conflicts will be overridden by the Registrar’s Office in order to do so. It is the student’s responsibility to check UIS immediately after the waitlist review to make sure his or her final schedule does not contain time conflicts. Upon completion of the FCFS review, students who did not get the FCFS course they wanted may then check for openings on UIS throughout the drop/add period.
Once the FCFS review process has been completed, all waitlists will be eliminated. You should check UIS regularly if you are interested in registering for a closed course, since seats may open up as students adjust their schedules during the drop/add period. Any openings in these courses will be filled via the web on a first-come first-served basis. Once any open seats are filled, the course automatically closes again until additional students drop. This process will continue until the add/drop deadline.

If you encounter error messages or if you need assistance in using the system, call the Law School Web Assistance Line (718) 990-2010, which is generally available from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday; and from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays.
Adding your name to a wait list
When you attempt to register for a FCFS course that has closed and gone to waitlist, it will appear as an error. In the status column, it will say CLOSED-(# of students) WAITLISTED. The action column to the left of the CRN will show NONE in the drop-down window. Go to the action column, and click on the arrow. Click on Wait List, then SUBMIT CHANGES. When the page is refreshed, the waitlisted course will appear as follows: The Status column will say WAITLIST ON (date) and the Action column will show NONE in the drop-down window. When you have selected all your classes, click on COMPLETE REGISTRATION.
If you attempt to waitlist yourself for a first-come first-served course, make sure you go back online again after you have entered your selections to verify that you completed the waitlist function correctly (i.e. that the course(s) appear on your web schedule with a status of waitlist). If the course does not appear, you need to follow the instructions above.
Policies to Remember from the Student Handbook
LL.M. in Bankruptcy courses for J.D. students
J.D. students may take LL.M. in Bankruptcy courses on a space available basis, but must register for LL.M. courses through Yvette Gutierrez, Director of the LL.M. in Bankruptcy Program, gutiery1@stjohns.edu. Creditors' Rights is a prerequisite for most LL.M. courses.
Limit on pass-fail courses
Only designated elective classes (e.g., externship placements) may be taken pass-fail. There is a 9-credit maximum on such courses. The 9-credit maximum on pass-fail coursework does not apply to co-curricular activity (e.g., Law Review), to pass-fail credits that are awarded for graded coursework at other institutions, or to Introduction to Law. Students may not opt to take otherwise graded classes as pass-fail.
