St. John’s University offers many
opportunities to participate in religious services on campus. In
Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel, located next to the university library
and below Council Hall, Mass is celebrated daily at 8:00 AM and at
12:15 PM (during the academic year). Every Sunday, Mass is
celebrated in this chapel at 11:00 AM. A coffee hour follows.
During the school year when the University is in session, Mass is
offered in the chapel on Sunday evening at 6:00 PM. This is
followed by dessert and a social. The sacrament of Reconciliation
(Penance) is available Monday through Friday at 11:55 a.m. The
chapel is open during the day for private prayer and
meditation.
During the year, Campus Ministry sponsors
various religious and outreach programs. Weekend retreats are
conducted. Programs meet needs of the poor, the homeless, the
elderly, and the disabled. Each year, the Law School celebrates the
traditional Red Mass at the beginning of the academic
year.
Throughout the academic year, the staff
of Campus Ministry conducts a program to explain to inquirers the
beliefs and practices of the Catholic Church and to reintroduce
inactive Catholics to the practice of their faith. In addition, all
of the members of the Campus Ministry are available for individual
counseling. They can also put inquirers into contact with the host
of support services offered by the University and services
available in the community.
Further information on all of these
offerings can be obtained from the Law School Chaplain, ext. 6131,
Law School Room 2-18, or University Campus Ministry, ext. 6255,
Marillac Terrace.
