“My Practice Will be in the Office Down the Hall.”

Kathleen Deegan Dickson `91 fondly remembers telling her father, an attorney, that “when I get older, my practice will be in the office down the hall.”  After years of clerking in her father’s practice and later graduating from St. John’s Law in 1991, Kathleen Deegan did indeed join her father’s practice and occupy the office down the hall.

Ms. Deegan Dickson has built a region wide practice in the area of real estate transactional matters, with specific expertise in the areas of land use and zoning.  Her work frequently involves gaining consensus between municipal planning boards and civic groups that have interests in the local development arena.  As former counsel to the City of Glen Cove Planning and Zoning Boards, Ms. Deegan Dickson understands the perspective of municipal government.  Currently her practice focuses on the representation of developers, property owners, corporations and individuals on issues pertaining to real property, zoning and land use.

While attending Law School, Ms. Deegan Dickson was focused on her studies and her involvement with the Criminal Law Institute and the Journal of Legal Commentary.  To this day she remains close with several classmates, although work, family and civic responsibilities often hamper attempts to reminisce outside of cards and e-mails.

Reflecting upon the growth of her practice over the years, Ms. Deegan Dickson offers the following advice to the Class of 2010.  “You must be involved in the community, especially when it comes to things that you believe in.  Through community involvement, you will build a reputation that resonates with honesty and respect – Factors that individuals rely on when selecting counsel or a law firm partner,” noted Ms. Deegan Dickson.  Post-graduation she has been recognized by Long Island Business News as a Who’s Who in Women in Professional Services and has been published multiple times by the New York Real Estate Journal.  Ms. Deegan Dickson is actively involved with; the Nassau County Catholic Lawyer’s Guild, the New York Democratic Lawyer’s Council (serving as the Glen Cove Elections Coordinator), the Advisory Council of the North Shore University Hospital in Glen Cove, the Board of Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation, and is a member of the Energeia Partnership, an organization dedicated to promoting “regional stewardship” on Long Island.  Outside the office and civic obligations, Ms. Deegan Dickson enjoys sailing with her husband and three children.
