About the
Program
The Law School's American Legal English program, an intensive
five-week summer course run by Professor Robert Ruescher,
is designed for students entering St. John’s LL.M. Program in
Transnational Legal Practice who are not native English speakers.
The course’s aim is to familiarize these students with the U.S.
legal system and its vocabulary, thereby enabling them to
participate more effectively in their studies in the LL.M.
Program.
In the course, students review, discuss, and outline U.S. statutes
and cases in various subject areas, including torts, contracts, and
civil procedure. Through daily lectures, readings, written
assignments, class discussions, and in-class exercises, students
develop their ability to communicate orally and in writing about
U.S. law.
The class meets four days a week during the summer, from 9:30 a.m.
to 3 p.m., with breaks in the morning and for lunch. Each class
begins with a formal session with the course’s professor, followed
by more informal sessions with the course’s teaching assistants,
who discuss the material covered in the professor’s session and
help students prepare for upcoming classes and
assignments. This program will run from Monday,
July 9th, 2012 to Tuesday, August 7th, 2012.
