LL.M. in Transnational Legal Practice

When Becoming a Global Attorney Matters to You
The LL.M. in Transnational Legal Practice program at St. John’s School of Law is designed to train U.S. and foreign attorneys in the rapidly expanding cross-border practice of law, to educate global attorneys within the New York City legal community ― the center of global legal practice ― and to enhance non-native English speaking attorneys’ skills in practicing law in English, the lingua franca of the global legal profession.

As a student in this two-semester, 24-credit program, you will:

  • Learn from some of New York’s best academic lawyers and most experienced practicing international attorneys.
  • Live in New York City, the financial, cultural and commercial capital of the U.S. and the world, as well as the center of transnational legal practice globally.
  • Prepare yourself for success in the global legal profession in a program focused on getting you ready to meet the challenges of 21st century cross-border legal practice.

An Outstanding Program of Study Focused on What You Need to Succeed
Participants in the LL.M. in Transnational Legal Practice program can choose to concentrate in one of these pre-approved study tracks:

  • Cross-Border Transactions: This track will prepare you for practice in transnational commercial law, a rapidly growing area of transnational practice in an increasingly economically interdependent world.
  • Public International Legal Practice: This track will prepare you for successful practice as legal counsel within foreign ministries and other government agencies, international organizations, international non-governmental organizations, or other practices with substantial public international law portfolios.
  • Transnational Dispute Resolution: This track will prepare you for successful practice in transnational private dispute settlement, including mediation, arbitration, and transnational litigation.

An Engaging and Varied Curriculum
Each study track combines required core courses and elective classes selected from the Law School’s J.D. course curriculum. The core courses include some combination of:

  • Transnational Legal Practice I and II
  • International Business Transactions
  • International Law
  • International Litigation and Dispute Resolution

If you prefer, you can design your own course of study incorporating required and elective courses suited to your professional needs or personal interests across a range of specialties, including for example intellectual property, bankruptcy, taxation, criminal law or comparative law.

In short, we will give you the tools you need to become a successful cross-border attorney trained to thrive in a global legal market.
