Located on Via Marcantonio Colonna in the “Rione Prati”
neighborhood of central Rome,
St. John’s Rome campus gives students a unique international
academic experience.
Until 1870, the area surrounding the Rome campus was known as Prati
di Castello (“Castle Fields”) because of the area’s proximity to
Castel Sant’Angelo and the regular use of the fields by the Pope’s
knights for military drill. It was again used as a military outpost
after Italy’s unification in 1871 and retains this traditional
character with many Ministry of Defence offices located in the
area. Prati is a unique rione in that the architecture
mainly consists of 19th and early 20th century building styles,
punctuated by wide avenues and “Umbertinian” palaces. Prati is
bounded by the Borgo Pio, the Vatican, the historic center of Rome,
and the Tiber River. A great variety of restaurants, museums and
monuments are close by. Prati has been traditionally defined by its
two major intersecting avenues: Via Cola di Rienzo (connecting
Piazza del Popolo with Piazza Risorgimento) and Via M.
Colonna/Cicerone (connecting Piazza Mazzini and Piazza Cavour). The
St. John’s campus is located on one of these main streets.
Against this beautiful historical backdrop, the Rome campus affords
students all the modern amenities. The rooms are air conditioned
and updated. A state-of-the-art computer lab and free campus-wide
wireless connectivity give students 24-hour access to e-mail and
internet services, as well as online databases and library
resources.
