The Ronald H. Brown Center for Civil
Rights and Economic Development
Named to honor Law School alumnus Ronald H. Brown '70, the first
African American Secretary of Commerce and the first African
American Chair of the Democratic National Committee, The
Ronald H. Brown Center for Civil Rights and Economic
Development aims to engage in legal studies, research and
outreach focusing on issues that affect the lives of
underrepresented people while simultaneously educating law students
to be leaders on issues of racial, economic and social
justice.

Resolution
With its mission of developing conflict resolution as both a value
and a practice in students’ professional lives, communities, and
the world, The
Hugh L Carey Center for Dispute Resolution at St. John's School
of Law offers courses, conferences, clinics and co-curricular
activities that make the Law School a leader in the
growing field of alternative dispute resolution. The Center is
named in honor of Hugh L. Carey '51, who served in the U.S. House
of Representatives and as the 51st Governor of New York, helping to
save New York City from bankruptcy during the fiscal crisis of the
1970s.

Public Interest
Center
Building on St. John's Vincentian mission of serving those
in need, the Public
Interest Center recognizes the ethical responsibility of
lawyers to promte social justice. The Center develops and hosts
programs on public interest law, counsels students on public
interest opportunities, advises the student Public Interest
Committee and generally fosters a view of public ineterest and pro
bono work as intrinsic to the study and practice of law.

The Writing
Center is a place where students can brainstorm about ideas,
practice writing exam essays, edit scholarly pieces, submit papers
to writing competitions, find publication sources for articles,
polish briefs and memoranda for use as writing samples, practice
