Spring 2011 Courses

Teachers enrolled in any of the Web-based courses should expect to put in four hours of work per week. These requirements are in line with the New York State graduate school credit requirements. Five courses lead to a certificate of professional development.

All classes are taught by experienced full time St. John’s University Professors. In addition, a technical help person is available to provide the online course participants with prompt phone or e-mail assistance. All courses are five weeks. Teachers do not need to be online at any specific times. Participation involves implementing lessons and reflecting on student learning across all classes of teachers in the course. Teachers respond to guiding questions about their lessons, offer each other feedback and suggestions for future instruction. The web is used as a resource for finding instructional materials, sharing ideas and supporting each other in the implementation of new teaching strategies, specific lessons, and reflecting on one’s own teaching and student learning. Teachers who have participated in these online courses have consistently reported that they immediately apply what they are learning from each other, course resources and professors to their teaching and share what they learn with colleagues in their respective schools. Comments indicate that feel part of a learning community that they helped to create, and that sharing a variety of instructional methods and reflecting on one’s own teaching helps heighten awareness of their own teaching style. All courses are 5 weeks and provide participants with 2 St. John’s University graduate credits.
