Advanced Certificate in Literacy Program, B-6 or 5-12

EmbarkAbout The Program
The Advanced Certificate in Literacy Programs, B-6 and 5-12 (21 credits each), enable the initially certified teacher to acquire the skills to teach reading, writing, and related language arts to students from early childhood to high school levels.  Both prospective and practicing teachers acquire the skills to become reading specialists capable of assessing reading and writing ability, and helping children and adolescents overcome their literacy-related problems.  In addition, holders of the certificate in literacy may become reading coaches working collaboratively with other school personnel in developmental reading programs. As such, the Advanced Certificate in Literacy can enhance one’s employability and career advancement in today’s educational marketplace.

Individuals must pass the New York State Content Specific Test in Literacy to obtain the Advanced Certificate in Literacy.

Admission Requirements
To be eligible for the Advanced Certificate in Literacy, you must have completed a master’s degree and possess initial teaching certification.
Literacy courses taken as part of a previously earned Master’s Degree in Education can be counted for this Advanced Certificate.
