Advanced Certificate in Literacy Program, B-6 or 5-12

About The Program:
The Advanced Certificate in Literacy Programs, B-6 and 5-12 (21 credits each), enable the initially certified teacher to acquire the skills to teach reading, writing, and related language arts to students from early childhood to high school levels.  Both prospective and practicing teachers acquire the skills to become reading specialists capable of assessing reading and writing ability, and helping children and adolescents overcome their literacy-related problems.  As such, the Advanced Certificate in Literacy can enhance one’s employability and career advancement in today’s educational marketplace . Literacy courses (6 credits) taken as part of a previously earned Master’s in Education may be counted for this Advanced certificate.

Certification:
Students need not take the comprehensive exams,but must complete all coursework with a GPA of no less than 3.0 and pass the Content Specialty Exam in Literacy to be endorsed for New York State Certification.
 

Admission Requirements:
To be eligible for the Advanced Certificate in Literacy, you must have completed a master’s degree and possess initial teaching certification. 
Literacy courses taken as part of a previously earned Master’s Degree in Education can be counted for this Advanced Certificate.
