St. John’s University’s
men's basketball team recently traveled 3,000 miles and faced
one of its most formidable opponents of the season — hunger in the
San Francisco Bay area. The Red Storm made the most of its trip and
embraced St. John's Vincentian mission of helping those in
need.

"This really shows what St. John's stands for — giving back to the
community, and helping people who are not able to help themselves,"
said senior
God'sgift Achiuwa ’13CPS, a member of St. John's prestigious
President's Society.
The team arrived at the San Francisco Food Bank at 9 a.m. on Sunday
morning, December 2, after checking into the team hotel well past
midnight. The players, coaches and trainers joined 22,000 others
who volunteered at the large food-distribution agency this
year.
"To be part of this program and this institution is a privilege,”
Achiuwa said. “For us, it's not just about coming to school and
playing basketball. It's more than that."
One of the largest facilities of its kind nationally, the SF Food
Bank serves all local food distribution agencies, such as soup
kitchens, churches and Boys and Girls Clubs in San Francisco and
Marin County, CA.
The SF Food Bank distributed 49.9 million pounds of food in 2011
and will record a similar total in 2012. To find out more, please
