Profile

Dr. Signer currently directs a Title IIA Grant for Teachers in the New York City Non-Public Schools that provides in-service education on using technology to enhance instruction through various online and Saturday courses.

Dr. Signer received her Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from the University of South Florida in 1992; Masters in Mathematics Education form the University of Michigan in 1972; and B.S. in Mathematics from Hunter College in the Bronx in 1971.

Prior to coming to St. John’s University in 1989, Dr. Signer was an Associate Professor at the University of Massachusetts at Boston from 1984-1989; and Assistant Professor at the University of Houston from 1982-1984. Her teaching experience includes being a mathematics teacher at Coral Springs High School, Coral Springs, Florida from 1978-1979; William Hinkley High School, Aurora, Colorado from 1975-77; East Junior High School, Aurora, Colorado from 1973-74; and James Monroe High School, Bronx, New York from 1972-1973.

Dr. Signer has received The John F. Kennedy Regular Democratic Club of Queens 60th Annual Award, Salute to Education and Labor in 2006; The St. John’s University Special Recognition Grants Award in 2006; The Teacher of the Year Award, St. John's University, School of Education and Human Services in1994; The Kappa Delta Pi Faculty Award, St. John's University Chapter in 1990; and her Interactive Video Program, Begin in Boston was selected as One of the Top Ten to be Included In the Videotape by the Association for Educational Communications & Technology in 1988.

Dr. Signer’s research on the relationship of faculty roles and student learning in online classes appears in print in teacher education journals as well as a chapter in book. Her work in this area has also been presented at Annual American Education Research Association Conferences and Sloan-C International Asynchronous Learning Networks Conferences.
