Dr. Scarpaci joined the St John’s faculty in February 2003 as Director of Field Experiences and Assistant Professor of Education on the Staten Island campus. Prior to that Dr. Scarpaci had been Director of Field Experiences on the Queens campus. He has extensive experience at all levels of education, having been a teacher, assistant principal, principal, director and professor.

As a school principal his school was selected by the New York State Education Department as a “School for the 21st Century” (1997), “A School that Works” (1994) and given the “Outstanding Early Childhood Program Award” (1996). His exemplary leadership style was demonstrated in his former schools selection as one of the first “School Based Management/Shared Decision Making Model Schools,” (1991). The school was also chosen by Redbook Magazine as “One of America’s Best Schools” (1995). Dr. Scarpaci was honored as “Man of the Year for 1997” by the Ragamuffin Organization of Bay Ridge and awarded “Outstanding School Supervisor Award” (1998) by St John’s University.

As Director of Field Experiences on the Queens campus, he reorganized the program, and implemented changes as mandated by the State Education Department. He also coordinated the Fellows program, and assisted in making it the successful program it has become.

Dr. Scarpaci’s outstanding achievements have been recognized locally and nationally throughout his distinguished career. His focus has been and will continue to be in the areas of teacher preparation, classroom management and curriculum. He is presently researching the relationships between effective classroom management, teacher retention, and student achievement.
