St. John’s School of Law Team Wins Securities Dispute Resolution Triathlon

October 21, 2009

The St. John’s School of Law team of Victoria Cantrella, Timothy Fox, and Katherine Kim won the prize for Overall Champions in the First Annual Securities Dispute Resolution Triathlon on October 17-18, 2009.

The Triathlon, hosted by the Hugh L. Carey Center for Dispute Resolution and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), was a three-stage event in which student teams played the roles of attorneys and clients in a realistic securities dispute. The teams first negotiated with each other, then mediated the same dispute, and finally proceeded to arbitration. Neutrals from FINRA served as mediators and arbitrators and judged the student teams. Fourteen teams participated, representing 12 law schools from 7 states. Other winners included Seton Hall (Negotiation), Florida (Mediation), New York Law School (Arbitration), and Penn State (Advocate’s Choice).
