BIG EAST Fever: St. John’s Beats No. 13 Georgetown in Fifth-Straight Win

January 05, 2011

In a thrilling performance straight from the glory days of BIG EAST basketball, St. John’s beat No. 13 Georgetown, 61-58, before 8,897 fans at Madison Square Garden on January 3.

With its fifth-straight win this season, the Red Storm became the first conference team to reach 3-0 this season. “I’m really pleased and proud of our players’ performance in terms of finding a way to get a ‘W” against “one of the better-shooting teams in the country,” said Head Coach Steve Lavin. “I commend our seniors for once again leading the way.”

“This is what I came to St. John’s for,” senior forward Justin Brownlee told the Associated Press. With only 10 seconds to play, Brownlee made a basket that secured St. John’s lead.

Senior guard Dwight Hardy scored 20 points — his sixth 20-point performance in the team’s past seven games. Under his leadership, the Red Storm is off to its best BIG EAST start since its 4-0 opening to the 1999-2000 season.

According to the New York Daily News, the victory “sent a little shiver through the college basketball world.” To students and fans, the team’s continued momentum sparks a new wave of “Red Storm Fever” — the enthusiasm inspired by all of St. John’s 16 BIG EAST, Division I men’s and women’s teams. With winners in the classroom as well as the playing courts and fields, the teams reflect St. John’s 140-year tradition of excellence in preparing students for service-oriented leadership in their professions, communities and world.
