Shavone Williams ‘12CPS: Discovering New Worlds Through Global Learning

January 07, 2011

Growing up in Queens, NY, Shavone Williams ‘12CPS loved her father’s tales about seeing historic European sites while in the Navy.

Today, the 21-year-old St. John’s junior is experiencing those very places through Discover the World Europe, a University program that allows students to earn 15 credits by living and learning in three European countries in one semester. She received extra support to study abroad as one of five St. John’s students to win a competitive Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship.

Shavone began the Spring 2010 semester at St. John’s campuses in Rome, Italy, and Paris, France. She is completing her study abroad experience in Salamanca, Spain. Guided by St. John’s professors, Shavone and her classmates are studying languages, art and culture while engaging in service.

A criminal justice major in the five-year B.A./M.A. degree program, Shavone was in middle school when she found out about St. John's. She won a $1,000 scholarship through CampUs, a summer program that brings children from public housing to the Queens campus for academics and athletics. It is part of St. John’s partnership with After School All-Stars (ASASNY), which has served more than 20,000 local children.

For Shavone, studying abroad is a life-changing experience. “It’s remarkable to see your classroom lessons come alive,” she said. St. John’s invites you to learn how  Global Studies can change your life.
