Change for Japan Project
In the Vincentian tradition, when our global neighbors are in
need, we respond and mobilize for action. The earthquake and
tsunami in Japan has left the lives of many devastated and in dire
need of assistance. The School of Education is hosting this two-day
campus-wide effort to raise funds for the Japanese recovery
efforts.
"Change for Japan," a pocket-change collection drive will take
place on April 12th (Tues) & April 14th (Thurs) from 8am to
8pm. The effort will entail student and faculty volunteers posted
at a variety of locations across the four campuses.
Volunteers are needed for one- or two-hour shifts to be situated at
key locations
with
a container for donations and a banner asking people to donate
their pocket change for relief efforts in Japan. All donations will
be forwarded to Catholic Relief Services. Any checks submitted
should be made out to Catholic Relief Services.
For further information or to volunteer, please contact Bernadette
Zacharub at the School of Education (718) 990-2664 or send an email
to: zacharub@stjohns.edu.

Fulbright Scholarship Brings Teachers to
Vietnam
By Yvonne Pratt-Johnson,
Ed.D
The School of Education at St. John’s University will lead a
six-week Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad (GPA) seminar to
Vietnam, July 5 – August 19, 2011. Participants include eight
K-12 teachers from New York City; three pre-service teachers; a
curriculum specialist; and a bilingual escort. This GPA seminar in
Vietnam will provide teachers with an unparalleled Vietnamese
language and cultural immersion experience for a better
understanding of Vietnam.
The GPA seminar will begin with an extensive pre-departure phase
that will provide participants with three full days of pre-trip
orientation. This will include aspects of Vietnamese history,
politics, culture, language and the peoples. During the
overseas phase, participants will receive intensive instruction in
the Vietnamese language and gain first-hand
knowledge of Vietnamese culture, history and arts through
historical and cultural visits throughout various regions of the
country. Community service-learning, school visits and
meetings with Vietnamese educators and GPA participants will also
be a part of the overseas phase. Finally, in the post-seminar
phase participants will debrief and reflect on their experiences
abroad.
For more information on this study abroad trip, please contact
Dr. Yvonne Pratt-Johnson at prattjoy@stjohns.edu or
