Issues Affecting America: Responsible Citizenship Fall 2008

Who were the first people to emigrate to New York and why did they choose to come here? What happened to them once they got here and what impact does their presence have on society? Through this presentation you will find out the prejudices and hardships immigrants went through in order to make their home in New York. Professor James Weiss will discuss Socioeconomic Status, Jacob Riis, the Five Points, Ellis Island, Jewish and Italian traditions and more!

Dr. James Weiss holds graduate degrees from Fordham, Long Island and St. John’s universities. An assistant principal in New York City schools for 24 years, he has published two books, several short stories about growing up in Brooklyn, NY and a short anthology of poems. Currently, he is a professor of both Speech and Discover New York on St. John’s University Staten Island’s campus.
