Diplomas and Commencement

We ask you to please file an application for your diploma at least four months before you expect to graduate. Applications are available in the office of the Registrar – Room 106 Newman Hall, Queens campus; or Room 200 Flynn Hall, Staten Island campus. At the Manhattan campus, visit the Office of Enrollment Services, on the first floor of Murray Hall.

If you need a name on your diploma that differs from your records, please submit a Change of Name Form with proof of your new name. Proof can be provided by court papers, marriage license, divorce papers and similar documents. Students need only submit those papers that attest to their name change, not confidential or personal information about the reasons for their name change.

Graduation and Conferral of Degrees
The precise dates are announced each year. “Conferral” means that the Registrar posts a notation of the award of a degree in our academic record-keeping system. For most purposes, the terms “graduation” and “conferral of a degree” are synonymous. “Commencement,” however, is another matter.

Commencement
The University has one general Commencement ceremony a year, in May. If you’re planning to attend your Commencement Exercises, please reserve seats for yourself and your guests by completing the forms for Queens and Manhattan Campus Commencement or Staten Island Campus Commencement.

Please refer any questions about Commencement to the Office of University Events at (718) 990-6365.

Replacement Diplomas
If an original diploma is lost, stolen or destroyed, we will replace it. To order a replacement diploma, you need to file a standard application for diploma and an affidavit that must be notarized. Please call (718) 990-2000 for applications and affidavits.

Loss, destruction, change of name and theft are the only reasons for which a diploma will be replaced. We do not issue duplicate diplomas.

Anyone ordering a replacement diploma also needs to provide copies of two proofs of identity, one containing a photo. Examples include a passport, driver’s license, social security card and work ID. There is a $50 fee for a replacement diploma.
