Artist Statement

This series of watercolors are a study in how light can manipulate the form and function of seemingly never changing structural objects, in this case buildings. The views illustrated here are of a hospital’s backside. It is the view that I see everyday but that is constantly changing due to the amount of light reflected off each structure. Time of day, weather conditions and seasons all play a role in its perspective metamorphoses.

These urban landscapes are executed in watercolor and are fairly small in scale. This practice allows me to explore, with a greater sense of focus and restraint, the intimate relationship between the arrangement of space, color and the division of the picture plane. It challenges me not only to capture the moment but find the harmony between color and shape at any given time while finding aesthetic solutions unique to water color painting.
