These rare prints, on loan from the collection of Theodore R.
Donson, date as far back as the 1500’s, creating a dialogue between
the evolution of the printed medium as it was embraced by each
generation of artists throughout history. The exhibition
investigates the intricate and subtle nuances that have made
printmaking the celebrated medium that it is.
In the printmaking process, both artist and printmaker
collaborate to create a masterpiece. The subtle variations that
exist from print to print make each individual piece unique and
distinct in its own right. Over the past 30 years the creative
collaborations between artists and master printmakers have become a
legitimate medium that investigates and highlights the thought
processes that artists engage while creating their work.
This exhibition features the collaborative masterpieces of
Rembrandt, Matisse, Laboureur, Levé, Altdorfer, Gauguin, Bottini,
Picasso, Ostade, Müller, Matisse, Delvaux, Maurin, Truchet, Mary
Cassatt, Braque and Villon. On display are progressive proofs
that demonstrate the subtle variations that occur when artists
experiment with different artistic elements such as papers and
ink.
This exhibition was made possible thanks to the generosity of
Theodore B. Donson, Marvel M. Griepp, in lending their
collection.
