I create sculptural installations that explore the ancestral
stories of my Taino, African and Spanish ancestors. My works
include painted panels, found objects and carved elements. The wood
that I use is provided by Puerto Rican forest rangers. Trees that
are older or in danger of falling are felled and made available as
wood to artisans on the island. I travel to Puerto Rico as often as
I can to select wood and collect forest material.
I was born in New York. When I was ten years old my family moved to
Puerto Rico. I returned to New York at age 16. I have a BFA from
Parsons School of Design in NYC and an MA in Education from Lehman
College. My sculptural installations have been shown at El Museo
del Barrio, The Studio Museum, The Alternative Museum, The Mexican
Museum in San Francisco, Galeria de la Raza in San Francisco, as
well as other venues coast to coast. I am also an author
illustrator of children’s books. My first book is How the Sea
Began, by Clarion Books.
