FocusOn Search and CategoryMap: An Integrated Approach for Discovery of University Resources and Libraries on the Web

Abstract
Multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research always represents the most active growth for academia and other research institutions, especially with the impact of emerging technological advances in science, technology, medicine (STM), humanities, and social sciences. However, most of our university resources and libraries on the Web are bundled or packaged by isolated individual disciplines at database level, and journal or book title level.
Tracking research activities, evaluating performance, making decisions for funding, budgeting and promotion, and bench marking TOC (total cost of ownership) within and across the boundaries of academic disciplines strategically, tactically, and operationally for multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research using quantitative data analysis have often challenged the following groups of people:
- young researchers who are looking for grants, tenures, and cross-disciplinary collaboration opportunities;
- senior researchers and administrators who are looking for answers for competitive analysis; and
- librarians who are supporting those researchers’ activities through university resources and libraries, and user services on the Web.
FocusOn Search and CategoryMap will enable integrated access and discovery of the university resources and libraries on the Web by
- re-bundling of the resources, providing classification and categorization, data mining, and business intelligence systematically at concept level, object level, and named entity level; and
- using leadership, communication, project management, collaboration, teamwork, and analytics through common vocabulary, common processes, and singular methodology. The presentation will illustrate how to enable such capability within existing information management infrastructure at St. John’s University and Libraries strategically and technically.
