From Hamburg to Piraeos: A Journal of Rev. H. A. Reinhold
Julia Upton, RSM, Department of Theology and Religious Studies, St. John’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
Ann Wintergerst, Department of Languages and Literature, St. John’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
In October 1922 Hans Ansgar Reinhold, on leave from the Seminary in Innsbruk, Austria, signed on the freighter S.S. Hamburg as assistant purser on a voyage to Java, Indonesia. He kept a journal of his travels for the Benedictine community at Maria Laach in the Rhineland where it remained in the Archives. Bringing the journal to light is a collaborative research effort between Dr. Ann Wintergerst, who translated the text, and Dr. Julia Upton, RSM, Fr. Reinhold’s biographer, who is editing the text.
