Visualizing Landscapes: Past and Present
Paula Kay Lazrus, Discover New York, St. John’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
Abstract: This preliminary work explores the use of GIS software to help visualize land-use in 19th century Italy. Maps of different scales and periods, aerial photographs and archival data are used in an attempt to picture the distance different groups of people traveled to their fields and to compare crops and plot sizes across social groups in order to highlight social difference and environmental changes.
