Teaching Excellence

The three other annual awards of $2,000 each will be given for Teaching Excellence.  Full-time faculty members are eligible to receive an award for undergraduate teaching or graduate teaching.  The third award will be granted to a member of the adjunct faculty.

Criteria
A full or part-time member of the St. John's University faculty who has completed 5 years of teaching in their current position at the University, and has not been a recipient of the award.

A record of excellence in teaching and scholarship, evidenced by:

  • teaching effectiveness and creativity
  • impact on students' learning and growth
  • significant contributions to the enhancement of the teaching/learning process
  • flexible, interactive pedagogy focusing on problems whose relevance to the real world is apparent; and
  • the highest ethical and professional standards in relationships with students and with other members of the University Community

Process for Recommendation      

  1. Faculty are nominated by a St. John's University administrator (not the Dean of your College), a colleague, or a former student who writes a letter of nomination. The committee will contact the nominees, inviting them to accept the nomination by submitting their credentials. These should include at least one letter of recommendation each from a former student, a colleague within the University and a colleague outside this academic community.  Recommendation letters can be submitted with your application or sent directly to the Center for Teaching and Learning, located in Bent Hall room 281.
     
  2. Nominees will submit:
  • An up-dated curriculum vitae
  • Materials that demonstrate innovative teaching techniques (no more than 5 examples)
  • A 1-2 page essay on the candidate’s personal philosophy of education, how teaching has fostered personal growth, how the candidate has developed as a teacher, e.g. "Why I Teach.”

Calendar

  • All nominations are due by Monday, December 10, 2007 by 4:30 p.m.
  • Nominees will be notified after the first of the year and invited to accept the nomination by submitting their credentials as noted above.
  • All credentials must be submitted by Wednesday, March 12, 2008.
