The Speech and Hearing Center of St. John's University was
established in 1976. It is a state-of-the-art facility for the
diagnosis and treatment of speech, language and hearing disorders
in children and adults. These disorders include voice problems,
stuttering, motor speech disorders, articulation and phonological
disorders, language disorders, hearing and auditory processing
problems in children and adults. Programs are also available for
children who are developmentally disabled and adults who have had
strokes or brain injury. Voice and diction training is available
for the foreign-born or person intent on improving his/her
communication competence.
The Center's audiological facility provides complete,
comprehensive audiological testing, including:
- brain stem evoked response testing
- counseling
- hearing aid evaluation
- aural rehabilitation with speech reading
- auditory processing evaluations
Other features include computers for speech-language training
for children, assistive-listening devices such as a telephone and
personal amplifiers for the hearing impaired, and a TTY
(teletypewriter telephone) to enable people with severely impaired
hearing or speech to communicate with the Center.
Staff
The staff of the Center is comprised of
licensed and certified clinicians who serve as clinical
supervisors. All staff speech-language pathologists and
audiologists are certified by the American Speech-Language
Hearing Association (ASHA), and licensed by the New York State
Department of Education, Division of Professional Licensing. These
qualifications are identical to those required of private
practitioners in the fields.
