The PARTNERS Program

PARTNERS is a multi-disciplinary clinical research organization based at the Department of Psychology at St. John's University in Flushing, Queens. PARTNERS is founded and directed by Dr. Elissa Brown, clinical psychologist, researcher and Professor of Clinical Psychology, national expert in child bereavement and parenting. PARTNERS stands for "Preventing Adverse Reactions to Negative Events and Related Stress", and currently is funded by SAMHSA (NCTSN) and NYS-OMH.

PARTNERS Mission

  • Research and provide state-of-the-art evidence-based mental health services to families and communities with preschoolers, children, adolescents, who have been through emotional stress and trauma, such as family violence and disasters.
  • Train professionals on the design, evaluation, and provision of such services.
  • PARTNERS fulfills this mission through creatively and sensitively integrating scientific findings and real world practice.  What we learn is disseminated to the Queens County, New York State, and beyond.

PARTNERS Vision

  • Move evidence-based services into the multicultural, multiethnic immigrant and native communities of Queens with families from over 100 countries who speak more than 138 languages—often underserved due to economic and cultural challenges.
  • Collaborate with cultural centers, schools and other community-based organizations, to develop cultural and community adaptations to these mental health services and increase the link between academic and real world settings
  • Create an innovative coalition of community leaders, community members, and academic experts that transforms the face
