I am currently in my fifth and final year of the BA/MA program in the English department here at St. John’s. As a graduate assistant, I am very thankful to begin my third and last year as a consultant at the Writing Center; the progressive environment it harbors has been the most nutritious for my learning passions. I am humbled and inspired by my peers, clients and the entire English department here at St. John’s, and I hope and aim to one day in the future assist in creating or being a part of a similar institution. Until then I plan on exploring the business and creative fields in NYC as an employee and also as an artist. My saving grace is a sense of humor; it gets me through life’s struggles. In my free time I like to dance, write poetry and study astrology.
The written word, unlike the spoken word, is visible and unchanging; it remains as a source that can be returned to and evaluated and whose core function has not only survived, but evolved alongside technological advancements. Writing is revelatory of a person’s literacy comprehension and point of view not only of a text, but of themselves and of the world. As a consultant I help build language skills that he/she may use in any/all future writing endeavors; I believe this is directly tied to the client’s self-confidence as a worthy and active member in all parts of society. The power of language is subtle, but immense.
