The Writing Heart

A common misconception about the Writing Center is that we are thought of as simply that, a center for writing. However, after having the privilege of working for the past two years with dedicated directors who strive to institute fun and relevant writing programs to better meet the needs of the St. John’s community, associating with fellow consultants who continuously challenge themselves in areas of academics and extracurricular activities, and speaking with clients who feel more confident about the writing process after having a face-to-face session, I believe it’s time for a name change!

As a double major in Advertising and English, my knowledge in these fields has prepared me for such a task as this and I propose an identity that can encapsulate the multifaceted mission and vital importance of such an institute, namely: “The Writing Heart” – where every stroke counts! You thought I was going to suggest “where every beat counts” weren’t you? Yet, when I consider the wealth of experience, valuable training, “real-world” skills, and shared camaraderie that I’ve participated in while at the Writing Center, the title seems more than fitting.

Retrospectively, looking back on my academic career, personal endeavors, and invaluable time at the WC, I know that as I conclude this chapter of my life and begin penning the words of another, I do so with a writer’s heart.
