WCOnline

WCOnline is an essential tool for the Writing Center. It has several different applications which are important to both students and tutors. These applications include: registration for new students, the online scheduling system, and reviewing and writing conference reports. Every tutor should be familiar with how to use these main functions of WCOnline, especially since we need to properly give assistance to students who come to the Writing Center. Below are descriptions on what each WCOnline application is and how to use them. Although these directions might seem a little complicated, the site is actually very user-friendly.

Registering New Students

Before we can schedule an appointment for a student, he must first be registered at the Writing Center. Creating an account for students is necessary for our consultants, because not only does it enable students to make appointments and tutors to have active records of individual students’ progress, but it also allows communication between the student and consultant.

How to Register:

• First, go onto www.rich16.com/sju.
• Click on the highlighted option: Click here to register.
• Have the student fill out the mandatory information fields (these are marked by asterisks).
• Click the button entitled: Register.
• The student will now have his own account user name and password and will be able to make appointments at the Writing Center.
• Students can also reach the registration process by going on www.stjohns.edu/writingcenter.

Scheduling Appointments

In order for a student to see a consultant he must first block off an hour time slot with a specific tutor. Depending on what the student prefers, he can request an E-Tutoring, an Online Chat, or a Face-to-Face session. * Make sure to remember to check the announcements on the www.rich16.com/sju page before scheduling an appointment.

How to Schedule an Appointment:

• Go to www.rich16.com/sju.
• Under the Log In section there are three spaces for the student’s email address (user name), password, and choice of campus, which must be filled out. * The student will not be able to log in unless they have registered.
• Click on the box called: Log In.
• The schedule for the chosen Writing Center campus will appear.
• Click on an available hour-long time slot for a face-to-face appointment
• This will bring up another box with required information fields, which must be filled out by the student. *If the student wants his professor to be sent a report confirming that he has been to the Writing Center, he must check the permission box.
• Click the button named: Save to finalize the appointment.
• If the student wants to make an online chat appointment or submit his work through e-tutoring, he must click on that option located at the bottom of every day’s schedule.

Conference Reports

After every face-to-face or online chat session, the consultant must fill out a conference report. These reports are used to keep a record of each session. The tutor must logon to the schedule and click on the student’s session. This will bring up a box which asks several open-ended questions designed to give a full portrayal of the consultant’s understandings, perceptions, concerns, and questions. These reports are used by professors, directors, and other consultants.

For a tutor to view past reports, you must click the “View Conference Reports by Student or Tutor” in “My Control Panel.” Here the consultant can get a sense of a student’s writing history at the Writing Center. It can also be used as a tool in training new tutors. Viewing past conference reports of fellow tutors can give new tutors ideas on different techniques used in sessions.
