Historical Success

The St. John’s Writing Center in Queens was created in 1997, and has grown in popularity ever since. During its first year of operation approximately 245 students visited the Writing Center. In the 2007-2008 academic year more than 6500 student sessions were held in the Writing Center. The Writing Center in Staten Island opened in 2006 and has also grown quickly due to its work with traditional face-to-face consulting, plus e-mail and chat consultations with students at all campuses in New York City and through St. John’s Discover the World program. Both campuses extend the St. John’s Vincentian social justice mission through collaborations with Bread & Life, and the Henry Street Settlement. Consultants also recently mentored high school students at Nazareth High School as they developed their own peer-focused writing center.
