Staff Development
Each semester the director, associate directors, and consultants
assess the mentoring, research and outreach work that happens
around the St. John’s Writing Centers and then develop a training
agenda that reflects our collaborative reflection. For the Spring
2009 semester, building on our strong foundations of tutoring
theory and practice (offering awareness of academic, public, and
private discourse communities; attending to collaborative process;
understanding linguistics and the politics of voice; fostering
attention to student-centered mentoring and writing process), we
will explore social and cultural dynamics that impact on social
justice, literacy, and access to education. Our goal is to
investigate the ways awareness of identity and privilege impact on
learning and mentoring writers. Every two weeks, the staff meets to
discuss these issues in small groups, complementing on-going
conversations on our wiki, blogs, and discussion board threads.
