2011 Summer Writing Institute in Paris

Twenty St. John’s University faculty participated in the 2011 Summer Faculty Writing Institute at the Paris campus from Sunday, July 31st to Saturday, August 6th.

The institute is both a writing retreat and writing across the curriculum workshop. Over the seven days of the institute faculty have designated time to work on their own writing and opportunities to discuss writing and research. Faculty also share drafts in progress with their colleagues.

To reflect on how they teach with writing and how their undergraduate and graduate students learn through writing, faculty read about best practices in the teaching of writing and consider student writers’ experiences across the curriculum. With facilitators from the Institute for Writing Studies and their colleagues, faculty reflect on the writing they have previously required of their students and explore when and why those assignments did – or didn’t -- engage students and support students’ learning.  Over the week faculty
develop new assignment sequences, learn new ways of responding to student writing, practice what is necessary for effective student peer review and writing workshops, and experiment with a variety of informal writing for learning and reflection.  Through the entire institute faculty talk about the relationship between their own scholarly and creative writing and the writing of their students and compare what is required of students in different courses across the curriculum.
