Committees and Working Groups

The director or any faculty member of the First-Year Writing Program can make the call to establish a new committee or working group.  A committee is a 1- or 2-year responsibility that works toward the establishment or evaluation of FYW policies and procedures.  A working group is a collective of faculty discussing and sharing aspects of teaching and/or research.  Each working group and committee has to set its own agenda and meeting schedule outside of teaching responsibilities and weekly faculty meetings.

Please email Carmen Kynard with any idea or plan for a committee or working group.  After a meeting or working group has been suggested to the director, the initiating faculty member will make an announcement at the following faculty meeting that offers an overview of the committee’s purposes and solicits interested faculty members.  The initiating faculty member should email the director in 2-3 weeks with a title of the committee or working group as well as the semester’s meeting schedule.  New meeting schedules for each semester should also be provided.   A chair or facilitator should also be selected whose main roles will be to set the meeting dates for the semester, communicate with the director, and write the final report.

Committees and working groups should plan to create a brief report of its goals and accomplishments at the end of an academic school year on the last day of classes (usually in May).  The report should list the attendance for each meeting and describe the next year’s plans (if applicable). These reports should be emailed to the director of the First-Year Writing Program, the director of the Institute for Writing Studies, and the director of the Institute for Core Studies.
