Landscapes of New
York (75129)
The City of New
York has three landscapes: natural, built and cultural. One
thousand feet of ice once covered the region. As it melted,
the rough topography of the area was revealed. Over time,
humans altered the natural landscape by filling marshes, blasting
hills, erecting buildings and polluting waterways; yet the natural
landscape still restricted unbridled growth and even threatened the
city’s well-being. Our built landscape is given life through
cultural evidence of the city’s diverse population: markets,
restaurants, signage, festivals, street conversations,
etc. This course looks at all three New York landscapes and
their interconnections. The class project will study how New
Yorkers perceive the city through ethnic
songs.
