Galileo Weather Ball & Boyle’s Law: PV=constant, was
the fall semesters’ physics topic presented by Dr. Huizhong Xu,
assistant professor of physics at St. John’s University. Dr. Xu,
guided the STEP students through such experiments as the Water
Tornado, the Cloud in the Bottle, and Boyle’s Law.
The purpose of these experiments was to demonstrate to students how
the atmospheric forces of nature are affected by such factors as
density, gravity, air pressure, and volume. | | |

During Mad Science Day at St. John’s University, Ms. Hannah from
the Mad Scientist Organization presented to 7th grade STEP
students an exciting and hands-on range of topics including: making
“slime”, the magic of “instant snow”, and testing acids and bases
on a pH (Power of Hydrogen) scale. This interactive event helped
engage the younger students assisting them with the visualization
of scientific facts and procedures while testing different
compounds. | |

On Saturday April 28, 2012, St. John’s University, as a member of
the Long Island Region Consortium, proudly hosted a conference of
300 plus, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the New York State
Science and Technology Entry Programs and Collegiate Science and
Technology Entry Programs. Through this consortium, NYS STEP and
CSTEP continues to promote increased diversity among students, and
encourages involvement in science, technology, mathematics, as well
as health-related fields and licensed
professions.
Attendees for this celebratory day included STEP and CSTEP staff,
students, and parents from the ten member institutions- Adelphi
University, Farmingdale State University, Hofstra University,
Nassau Community College, New York College of Osteopathic Medicine,
New York Institute of Technology/Central Islip, Suffolk County
Community College, St. John’s University, Stony Brook University,
and State University of New York at Old Westbury. Julia Upton, RSM,
Ph.D., Provost of St. John’s University, welcomed all to the campus
and the day’s events. The keynote speaker at lunch was Mr. Andrew
Parton who serves as Executive Director of The Cradle of Aviation
Museum.
A notable highlight of the day included poster presenters from the
following six regional institutions: Farmingdale State College,
Hofstra University, New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, St.
John’s University, Stony Brook University, and State University of
New York at Old Westbury. As the host institution, St. John’s
University was represented among the presenters by seven of its
