and rewarding academic excellence among freshman in institutions of
higher learning. The oldest and largest freshman honor
society, Phi Eta Sigma was founded on March 22, 1923, and now has
more than 300 chapters throughout the United States and more than

chapter at St. John’s, students must maintain a minimum cumulative
grade point average of 3.70 at the end of their first two semesters
at the university.
How is Phi Eta Sigma involved on
campus?
Phi Eta Sigma participates in a number of academic and community
service events throughout the year. The organization partners
with local agencies on service projects which allow them to
reach-out into the community and serve diverse groups of
people.
Examples of Phi Eta Sigma events are:

- Annual Toy Drive
- Phi Eta Sigma Mentoring Program
What is the Phi Eta Sigma Mentoring
Program?
Phi Eta Sigma has a mentoring program in which students who are Phi
Eta Sigma members volunteer to serve as mentors to first-year
students. Students are often matched based on their majors or
interests. These students come together for monthly luncheons and
meetings and attend Phi Eta Sigma events together.
