University Freshman Center
The transition from high school to college is an exciting time and
signifies a major milestone in your child’s academic career.
They will begin a journey filled with many new and wonderful
experiences and along the way, make memories and friends that will
last a lifetime. As a parent, you will no doubt take pride in
your child’s accomplishments.
The transition to college is experienced by parents, as well as
students. Whether this is your first child to attend college
or you are a seasoned veteran, you understandably want to ensure
that your child has access to necessary support services at the
University. Be assured that the University Freshman Center is
committed to students and parents during the first year at St.
John’s University. Let us explain what we do and how we can
help students continue on the road to success.
As a freshman, your child will have a personal advisor who will
guide them along the way and answer all of their questions.
They will never be alone, as students consider the University
Freshman Center their “home away from home.” As parents, this
is an invaluable source of comfort.
We know that both you and your child will have many questions about
their major, classes, professors, exams, term papers,
extracurricular activities etc. and we are prepared to answer them
for you. Their advisor will be the primary resource for all
of the information they will need. He or she will be their
link to the many excellent support services available to them as
members of the St. John’s community. They can expect for
their advisor to be in regular contact with them at various times
of the year regarding specific matters related to their academic
pursuits. Students may also initiate a meeting or
conversation with their advisor as frequently as they
wish.
In addition to academic advising, a student’s freshman
advisor will discuss with him or her the large number of
extracurricular and co-curricular activities on campus. Our
goal is for all students to be engaged both academically and
socially and to be an active member in our University
community.
We hope that we can demonstrate to you and your child our sincere
dedication to student development as we begin this wonderful
journey together.
