Athletics

Divisions
The ranking of a university’s athletic team (division 1 is the highest). Teams only compete with other teams in the same division.

Intramurals
Activities existing or carried on within the bounds of an institution. For example, intramural athletics.

Midnight Madness
This is the opening of basketball season at St. John’s University. Often it includes an exhibition game, introduction of team members, a DJ, and prizes.

NCAA
The National Collegiate Athletic Association.  This is a voluntary association of about 1,200 colleges and universities, athletics conferences and sports organizations devoted to the sound administration of intercollegiate athletics.

Recruitment
The process by which a student is invited to enroll in a university because of their superior skill in an athletic division. This may include the benefit of a scholarship.

Title IX
It is part of the 1964 Civil Rights Act which requires equal participation in, and equal funding of, women's and men's athletic programs.

Varsity
The principle team representing the University in any given sport.

Walk-ons
A student who is not recruited but becomes a member of a team by trying out, after he/she begins school.
