University Learning Support Services offers numerous aids to
successful learning. The rationale of the department is straight
forward: professors teach, but it is each student's responsibility
to learn. Obviously, the more proficient you are at learning the
more successful you are academically.
Tutoring
Tutoring is offered by both peer and professional tutors.
Tutoring can assist you by enhancing your understanding in core
courses. Peer tutors can help you learn more since they have taken
many of the same classes in which you are enrolled.
Professional tutors can assist you since they have earned their
degrees in the subjects you are studying. Both types of tutors are
familiar with course requirements and professors' expectations, so
they can serve as guides on your road to success.
Critical Thinking Skills
Workshop
Critical Thinking Skills Workshop uses active learning to encourage
the application of critical thinking skills to your college courses
and to real life. After all, the goal of college is not to learn
more facts, but to develop the ability to take those facts and
combine them with your own ideas in order to develop new products
and approaches. Critical Thinking Skills Workshop is the first step
on that path.
Reading Workshop
Reading Workshop applies critical and interpretive reading
techniques to your college work. Because college professors demand
greater maturity, responsibility, and independence than high school
teachers expect, the reading and study techniques you used in high
school may not be adequate for college. Reading Workshop
demonstrates the tools which are essential for academic
success.
Supplemental Instruction
Supplemental Instruction targets difficult core courses. Trained
Supplemental Instruction leaders attend classes and offer sessions
to help students learn how to learn the course material. In effect,
they are trail blazers for you through unfamiliar academic
territory. Here are some University Learning Support Services
teachers and offices. Stop by to ask questions and get answers.
