The Learning Resources Center

The Learning Resources Center provides academic support for students on the Staten Island Campus of St. John’s University. Free tutoring, not limited to remedial instruction, is available in diverse areas of study including Mathematics, Computers, Legal Studies, Statistics, Accounting, Finance, Philosophy, Theology, Psychology, Literature and Foreign Language.

Workshops
Each semester the Learning Resources Center sponsors a Reading Workshop to help students apply critical and interpretive reading techniques to college coursework.

Throughout the semester the LRC offers additional workshops as the demand dictates. Our past workshops have been collaborative projects with other departments and have included:

  • Understanding and Avoiding Plagiarism
  • Learning Styles
  • MLA & APA Documentation Style
  • Improving Organizational and Study Skills
  • Resume Writing Clinic

Writing Center
The Learning Resources Center also serves as the Writing Center for students on the Staten Island Campus. We offer assistance in all aspects of the writing process including brainstorming, researching, revising, editing and proofreading. Grammar and mechanics of writing can also be addressed.  Our tutors will assist writers with the proper formats for MLA and APA documentation.

Study Day
Each semester our efforts culminate in Study Day.  On the date designated by the University as the semester Study Day, the LRC provides numerous individual and group review sessions to help prepare students for final examinations. The entire tutoring staff is available to assist students throughout the day.

Our staff is comprised of 14 peer tutors, Mrs. M. Fama, Administrative Assistant, and Prof. M. Haley, the Director.
