Dr. Esther Calzada is an Assistant Professor of Child and
Adolescent Psychiatry at the New York University School of
Medicine. She received her B.A. at Duke University and her Ph.D. in
Clinical Psychology from the University of Florida. Her
research interests include the role of immigration and
acculturation in family processes, developmental changes in
parent-child interactions and behavior disorders in preschool-aged
children.
Dr. Calzada is currently working on a number of research projects
at the NYU Child Study Center. First, she is a Co-Investigator for
ParentCorps, a large-scale study funded by the U.S. Department of
Education focused on preventing conduct problems in poor urban
communities through a universal mental health program for
pre-kindergarten children and their families. In addition to the
ParentCorps project, Dr. Calzada is the Principal Investigator of
two research grants investigating mental health services for
minority communities. The Caring Across Communities grant, awarded
by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, provides mental health
services to young Afro Caribbean students. She also received a
mentored Clinical-Scientist Development Award from the National
Institute of Child Health and Human Development to study parenting
practices in Latino families with pre-kindergarteners.
Dr. Calzada is a member of numerous professional associations such
as the American Psychological Association, the Society for
Prevention Research and the Society for Research on Child
Development. She has also authored publications in a number of
peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of Clinical Child and
Adolescent Psychology, the Journal of Child and Family Studies, the
Journal of Abnormal Child Psychiatry, Cognitive and Behavioral
Practice, and Anales Espanoles de Pediatria.
